Sorry to intrude chaps but I work for Performance Bikes magazine and am doing a bit on buying a used 748. Can any of you chaps give me a few pointers of what to look out for, what goes wrong etc. I have a feeling it will be the same as my 916!!!!

Cheers

Jon

Hi Jon.

I have had one for almost 4 years and so far:

Clutch slave cylinder seal went
Battery died and replaced with gel one.

No rocker problems (touch wood). In fact last time they were checked I was told they were in great condition.....

Hi Jon

As you said much like the 916, regulators on the older bikes, always change the front tyre from a 60 to a 70 profile, apart from that not much. i had a 748 for 5 years and cuerrently own a 02 748R which i have had for 7 years and love to bits, only one rocker changed in that time, its serviced every year at Snells, dont do a huge amount of miles, about 3,000 but have been out to the Nurbugring for the last two years and the 748R hasnt missed a beat, great bikes, i have gone +4 on the rear sprocket, but still great great top end speed  Wink
Hope this helps

Hi Jon

I've had two 748s - both S versions, 2002 models. In total about 16,000 miles on them. Only thing gone wrong was a dodgy relay. Otherwise the same as the others. Found that the 60 profile front always felt like it was going to tuck. Much prefer the 70.

Have had my '99 748 Bip two years now and ride it as a day to day bike. It has done over 10,000 miles now and I do the servicing myself.

The regulator went so I replaced it with one off ebay for £40, no problems (I added an extra heat sink). Oil pressure switch failed and replaced with the Opel equivalent £4.99. Coolant header tank sprung a leak - £20 off ebay, sorted.

Everytime that I read about 916/748's in Bike mags you get the same old crap - hideously expensive, unreliable and uncomfortable, I haven't found any of this to be true.

If you get a Ducati main dealer to do the work, insist on Ducati spares and never ride the thing I guess they can be.Wink
